THE ARGENTINE ROBIN HOOD
When faith meets legend and a man becomes a saint by the will of the people.
Saint by popular will
In the heart of Argentina lives the legend of Gauchito Gil, a man who truly lived at the end of the 19th century, becoming a saint by the will of the people. Considered by many as an “Argentine Robin Hood” because he stole from the rich to help the poor, challenging the injustices of his time. Captured and killed by the authorities, he became a martyr, hero, and then a miraculous figure. His story has survived in the faith of millions who still invoke him today for protection, health, and fortune.
Every January 8th, thousands of devotees gather at the place where he lived, but his presence is felt every day: in the horns that sound in front of his sanctuaries, in the altars along the roads, in the red and blue colors that mark his devotion.
I wanted to tell this silent and powerful faith outside of official occasions, in everyday life, when the myth becomes life and popular spirituality is renewed in daily gestures of hope.
