ON THE TRAIL OF SAN GENNARO
Where the sacred meets everyday life
On the trail of San Gennaro
San Gennaro is an icon, it is a myth, it is a legend and above all it is an essential element in Neapolitan culture. A story of nearly two thousand years continually renewed by the imagination and faith of the people.
Everyone knows the wonder of blood dissolving in ampoules. Few, however, dwell on the myriad forms this faith takes in everyday life outside of public events: artisan workshops producing exquisitely crafted terracotta statuettes, sacred and modern art, stylized objects for tourists, murals, votive chapels, tattoos, small home altars, ancient religious associations, etc.
Faith outside the spotlight is intimate and reserved, and to document it with a camera, it is necessary to earn people’s trust, enter their homes, and understand their lives, searching for traces of this famous saint, so visible on official occasions but who then seems to disappear like an underground river in everyday life.
