ANNA AND THE RUSH WEAVING
The story of a woman who weaves threads of rush and memory, keeping an ancient art alive with modern hands.
Anna and the Rush Weaving
Anna works in the family workshop with her brother and stubbornly perseveres in the ancient tradition of rush weaving. For four generations, Anna Siciliano and her family have managed a weaving workshop in their small town of Acquarica del Capo, in Salento. Today, they are the only ones preserving what was once a common trade, involving almost the entire local population: men for harvesting raw materials in the marshes and weaving the tougher fibers, and women for rush weaving, which requires greater dexterity. Anna is the heir to this ancient, endangered tradition, which she learned from her mother. Her creations are innovative and unique, with an interesting mix of traditional techniques and contemporary design. Anna combines her rush baskets with other materials such as metals, leather, and handmade fabrics to create objects that are sold internationally.
