EL COMEDOR

The strength of a resilient people

El Comedor

The “comedores,” “merenderos,” and community canteens in Argentina are grassroots initiatives created to combat poverty and hunger in vulnerable areas. Despite public policies, these facilities are crucial for ensuring food and social support to the poorest families. For several years, state funding has been increasingly reduced, exacerbating difficulties. The “comedores” not only distribute meals but also promote activities such as workshops and training courses, fostering a sense of community. The staff also monitors child abuse and domestic violence. Initiatives like those of Rosemary and Maria demonstrate how these spaces help protect the most vulnerable and provide legal and health resources, becoming vital tools to mitigate the effects of the social and economic crisis.
In a comedor in the barrio 1.11.14, I attended a popular assembly, held weekly, where politics, neighborhood issues, and migrant rights are discussed: out of 52 attendees, 48 were women.
Considering the Argentine political situation, the 35,000 comedores and other forms of assistance and collective networks represent a powerful tool of social solidarity that gives the country the strength to face even the most difficult situations.
